Brian was born and raised
in the small steel town of Latrobe, Pennsylvania. He earned a BSEd. from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in
Secondary Social Studies Education in 1989. Twenty-three years later, Brian earned his MA in history
from Old Dominion University.
Prior to relocating to Gloucester, Brian served as an
instructor and residential supervisor with United Cerebral Palsy of Pittsburgh
from 1991-2003 and also worked as a part time real estate agent during these
years.
In 2003, Brian accepted a position
teaching social studies at GHS, where he is currently in his tenth year. Brian initially joined GEA in 2005
concerned about the many ways in which teachers are exposed to liability
issues, but over time learned of the many other benefits of being part of
GEA. Brian served as vice
president of GEA from 2007-2011, then agreed to take the position of president
when Carolyn Molly stepped down from the position in 2011.
Brian credits the collective
action, wisdom, tenacity and dedication of the GEA Executive Committee, the GEA
Representative Assembly, and the fine legacy of its past presidents for leading
GEA in its many accomplishments, including passage of the civility policy,
working to obtain a salary increase after four years, successfully fighting
against the numerous attacks on public education, being an outstanding voice
for students and teachers, and being an ear and a beacon for all GEA
members. Indeed, it is the members
who are the strength and the future of GEA.
On a personal note, Brian and his
wife Beth, who is a native of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, have been happily
married since 1998. Beth is on the
staff of the intensive care unit at Mary Immaculate Hospital. Brian and Beth have made their home in
the Cappahosic area since moving to Gloucester nine summers ago, along with
their favorite barky Pekingese, Chelse.
Vice President- Clint Alexander
Clint is the Chair of the Fine Arts department at Gloucester High School. He is the theatre arts teacher and director.
Clint is currently serving his second year as the Vice President of the GEA. He became involved with the Executive Committee to make sure his voice was heard and that he was making a positive influence on education and the community. He believes it is important to not just sit back and hope the powers that be do the right thing, but to push and pull all of your insights to those powers that be that they make the right decisions.
Secretary- Jennifer Rowe
Jennifer is a social studies teacher at Gloucester High School. She currently teaches World History I and History of Gloucester, she is in her fifth year teaching at Gloucester High School. Jennifer joined the GEA upon being hired in 2008. She was quickly encouraged to join the GEA executive board by GEA Vice President Brian McGovern, who was also her mentor. Jennifer knew from the beginning how important it was to be a member of her professional organization thanks to role models such as Ann Andrews and Sally Demuth.
Jennifer would start out as an At-large member, but when Secretary Sally Demuth became ill, Jennifer stepped up to take on those responsibilities. Jennifer has served as Secretary for four years.
Jennifer and her husband Ashley welcomed a beautiful baby boy in September of 2011. They make their home in Bellamy, with their son Riley and boxer Pierce.
Treasurer- Jackie Outten
Jackie came to Gloucester High School
as a Business teacher in October of 2005. She didn’t know about GEA
until Wendy Morecock asked her if she would be interested in joining. She told her about GEA and she signed up in September of 2008. In 2009, she was elected
Treasurer. She joined because she felt it was important to become a part of her professional organization and because of the great benefits of
membership. It’s also nice to know that the executive board is looking
out for the best interests of the teachers in Gloucester county. She is very
happy she joined, and wishes she had done it sooner.
At-Large- Roberta Shifflett
Roberta Shifflett has been teaching for 30 years, 15 years at Achilles Elementary and 15 years at Bethel Elementary, she is a National Board Certified teacher. She was also named Bethel's Teacher of the Year and Gloucester County's Elementary Teacher of the Year for the 2011-12 school year.
